Distress

Investigative reporter Andrew Worth turns down a documentary on a mysterious new mental illness -- "Distress, " or acute clinical anxiety syndrome, for another assignment. He's on his way to the artifical island of Stateless, where the world's top physicists are gathering to decide on a new TOE, or Theory of Everything, to replace Einstein's outmoded legacy.
Chief among the scientists is the brilliant African Nobel laureate, Violet Mosala, the focus of Worth's story, who is the subject of mysterious death threats. Worth begins his own investigation, but it takes on even more urgency when he finds that Distress, the mental plague now affecting millions, is linked somehow to the approaching "Aleph Moment" when the TOE is finalized. The countdown has begun for a disaster that will reach all the way back to the Big Bang. And beyond...

After developing a lengthy expose on "frankenscience," SeeNet reporter Andrew Worth is burnt out. So burnt that he passes up a plum assignment covering the new disease "Distress." Instead, he asks for a lower-key job profiling Violet Mosala, a scientist who earned a Nobel Prize at the age of 25 and who is about to announce her version of the Theory of Everything. The TOE is an attempt to explain how all scientific theories fit together, but it may actually be the catalyst that created the universe, making Violet the "Keystone" of the universe. So much for the quiet assignment ...

my giaconda: after the resurrection

my giaconda: after the resurrection

After a resurrection

Yes, we did actually just go home. It says so and I think the heat had a lot to do with it. Walking through the open door, into the cool, clammy stone: sesame bread baking on the fire, mother - of course – some olives. Going home. Do you know, when Jesus met Simon on the road, one of the first things he asked for was a broiled fish? I mean, broiled? We knew he had a fish thing after the problem of what to serve with the loaves, but broiled? My mother was grilling fish, stuffed with herbs, fennel, garlic, and the skins were blackening nicely. My father calls this “caramelised,” my mother smiles and then makes gruesome references to the auto da fe. She cooks, he doesn’t. Do fathers cook? Do fathers do anything except forsake?

We needed to go home. The grave clothes. That’s another thing. Mary and the others were quite clear that they had been left beautifully folded in the tomb. Neat. He was a bit like that, a bit repressed, not really ambitious enough to venture far. Curing a man from dropsy- Dropsy for God’s sake. He could have done better. Talking to tax collectors stuck up trees when he could have done more, international relations maybe. But he never seemed to want to travel much. Clothes. They met him on the road, wandering off to God knows where. Bur how had he got dressed? He can’t have known where he was going and was obviously quite distressed.

Do many people get resurrected, display their wounds, ask people for fish? (At this point Thomas must have been very queasy- not the butchest of men-problem with the twin thing- but who wouldn’t have been?) But to ask Thomas of all people to stick his fingers in the gaping holes, and then to ask for a broiled fish! He was odd like that. Where did he get dressed? Lazarus managed to stay in his grave clothes, but Lazarus was more grounded. And why was he hungry? If Mary had his clothes sorted surely she could have given him breakfast. There again, she was almost as queasy as Thomas. Pregnancy is not straightforward, and seeing your love crucified doesn’t help. Absent fathers seem to run in that family.

So we went home. I think we were almost too tolerant with him, but he could be difficult, and home always seemed wonderfully calm after, you know, the episodes. The temple thing- my mother blamed John, but whilst he egged him on, John had some grip on reality. My mother could cook eggs and aubergines and make a substantial salad of spinach and lentils and tomatoes and we could all talk with John. He knew more about life and had a better grip on resurrection. John knew you didn’t actually have to die. He said that wading around in rivers was enough and I could do that. In fact one day I did. But I kept my clothes in sight, on the water’s edge, and they dried in the sun. How could Jesus rise up from the dead without planning what to wear? Maybe it’s because I am Jewish, we’ve always been tailors in my family, my father, my grandfather, my great grandfather. I know you can’t expect the deity to invest in Egyptian linen but it was all a bit more stable. Stables. That was another problem, which is why I went home. My mother would never ever have settled for a stable. My mother always insisted on clean clothes, neatly arranged furniture, and good cooking. That’s why I went home, where things are neat. You need neatness after a resurrection.

Yeah Green! Holiday weekend ahead so no time to create this week--thought I would tag for this week's challenge before departing...it is all recycled/reused materials (and less 'distressing', in the crafty way anyway) :) Cheerio!

(Newspaper, Netflix envelope, Cheerios box, magazine pages, ribbon from shower favor, scallop & scraps of jute from the bin)

Previous note:
*Happy Earth Day!*
As if I do not find 'distressing' distressing enough, I thought I would further challenge myself this week....
1. Reuse (Recycle) materials only--minimize adhesive (in honor of Earth Day)
2. Distress! :o)
3. Make card in an hour or less (bc that is all the time I had today!)
This is definitely the oddest card I've ever made--but it was funny to do and maybe relieves the Earth of a little distress too! Cheerio!
